Rotary Brothers Reunited

If you’re even remotely familiar with grassroots drifting in the US you’ve surely heard of Team Breaking. They’re one of the oldest teams around and their cars are easily identifiable, as they usually sport bright metallic blue paint and neon yellow wheels. Two of the founding members, Drake and Derek (the brothers Bianski) had spent years driving together. Derek in his FD3S RX-7 and Drake in a turbo Mazda Miata.

However, for the past few years, that dynamic duo hasn’t been on track together. While Derek had continued driving regularly, Drake had sold his Miata and picked up a RHD FD RX-7 shell. After years of work he turned that mostly bare shell into a drift monster worthy of sharing the track with Derek’s RX-7.

With Final Bout: Special Stage Central (2021) just around the corner, the Bianski brothers decided it was the perfect opportunity to drive together again for the first time in years.

Derek had finished a full overhaul of his car not long before this. Including a complete aero and wheel change as well as a motor rebuild.

I did a full feature on his FD after the updates. You can check it out here:

We all left from Drake’s house just outside of Indianapolis. At roughly 8-10 hours, it’s a bit of a haul from there to USAIR in Wisconsin. While Drake decided to trailer his car up to be safe, Derek has no issue driving his FD long distances with it proving to be more than reliable over the years.

We ended up going through central Illinois up into Wisconsin instead of the usual route through Indiana and Chicago. It’s an easier drive, but it probably took us at least 10 hours with all the stops we had to make for gas..

After finally making it to USAIR the FDs were set up in the pits while everyone got prepped to drive.

This wasn’t Drake’s first time driving his FD on track since finishing it, but it was going to be his first time driving it alongside Derek’s..

And now both of them were behind the wheels of two of the coolest FDs in the US…

And as it turned out, the Bianski brothers still knew how to drive together.

No brothers were harmed in the making of this post…
